Welcome to Matico

In 1999 I found myself travelling through South America on a six month adventure. Having fallen in love with the diverse scenery, the people and their rich culture, I have returned every year since.

I deal directly with Latin American families in their local communities. The skilled producers of the goods on sale: are paid a fair and realistic price relative to a good standard of living within their country.

I have always endeavoured to build a relationship with the various families I have dealt with and hope to continue to support them, whilst giving my customers a fair deal and an opportunity to appreciate the vibrant and wonderful crafts from these South American countries.

Machu Pichu

Matico supply quality goods from various South American Countries.

Alpaca Knitwear from Peru - Woven jackets, knitted jumpers and ceramics from Equador. Llama wool hats from Bolivia. These wonderful countries each have unique identities which comes out in the crafts and clothing produced by the proud families I deal with.

From the coast of the Andes to the Amazon.
The four day trek to Machu Picchu, Peru is a breath taking experience. The trail connects the traditional mountain capital of Cuzco to the sacred Inca city of Machu Picchu. It winds through mountain passes, over high peaks (“dead woman’s pass at 4200m) and plunging into deep vegetated valleys.

Coroico, Bolivia is a small town situated in the subtropical mountain valleys between the Andean peaks and the tropical jungle. The road that takes you there from La Paz is infamous for a very good reason, it’s scary. The road has no barriers and few passing points for vehicles In a few hours you descend almost 12000 feet.. If you dare take you’re eyes off the road the scenery is spectacular. Steep vegetated mountain slopes that drop hundreds of feet below you.

The train from Riobamba, Ecuador to Alausi makes a great day trip. You can enjoy the sights of the Andean countryside, by riding on the roof of the train. La Nariz del Diablo ( the Devil’s nose) is a sharp zig-zag piece of track cut into the rock, a fantastic piece of engineering, that sadly lost many lives during it’s construction.

These are just a few truly memorable experiences of my times in South America. Along with the sights and friendly hospitality of the locals it makes it a joy to visit.
